Green River was an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984. Considered one of the first grunge bands, Green River is best known for being the precursor to multiple key early 1990s rock bands, most notably Pearl Jam , Mudhoney , Mother Love Bone , Temple of the Dog , and Love Battery . Although Malfunkshun and Soundgarden were more popular in Seattle at this time, Green River was the first band of this movement to release a recording. Come On Down has been described as a balance between punk and metal, being similar to a mashup of 1980s metal together with early Mudhoney , and with the sound being "dirty". [ 1 ]
Green River chose to record Dry As a Bone for Bruce Pavitt's new label, Sub Pop. However, Pavitt couldn't afford to release it until the following year, and, as had happened with Come On Down, the record was delayed. Released in 1990 by Sub Pop Records, the album combines Green River's two releases for the label: Dry as a Bone (1987) and Rehab Doll (1988). It also includes the bonus tracks "Ain't Nothing to Do" (recorded in 1985), "Searchin'" (recorded in 1986), and "Queen Bitch" (recorded in 1987).
Turner was also the first guitarist in Green River which again featured Arm and Gossard, and also acquired the services of Jeff Ament (later Pearl Jam) on bass guitar. [1] Turner left the band in 1985, citing differences with the "careerist" Ament. [citation needed] Arm and Turner started Mudhoney on New Year's Day, 1988.
