The Michigan State Fair, first held in 1849, was the nation's first state fair. It was held in various locations throughout Michigan until 1904, when Joseph L. Hudson formed the State Fair Land Company, acquired 135 acres of land at this site, and deeded it to the Michigan Agricultural Society. The 1905 Michigan State Fair was held on this site.
The Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building is a 1-1/2 story rustic log structure built entirely of Michigan pine, and is one of the few remaining examples of the rustic log architecture used in the 1920s and 1930s by the Michigan State Park system.
It was located on the site of an earlier mansion built by Anna and Horace Dodge, also known as Rose Terrace. The 1931 version of Rose Terrace was an enormous, 42,000 square feet French-style chateau overlooking Lake St. Clair. The district includes the township hall, a railroad depot, a church, four bars, a senior citizen's center, a lumber company office, three commercial structures, and one single-family residence.
The Fix House, demolished in 1980, was a one-and-one-half-story brick structure built in the tradition of French-Canadian vernacular cottages. It was built in 1853 and side additions were constructed some years later. Only fifteen such buildings were identified in Monroe County, which was settled by French pioneers in the 1780s. [10]
