Vindication and Candlemas Island were both discovered on 2 February 1775 by James Cook on the HMS Resolution. [1] In 1951–1952 the Argentine frigates ARA Hércules and ARA Sarandí installed a marker on Vindication, claiming Argentine sovereignty over the island; [2] this is the first recorded landing on the island.
