Two aikido black belts training. Rank and belts are not equivalent between arts, styles, or even within some organisations. [4] In some arts, a black belt may be awarded in three years or even less, while in others it takes dedicated training of ten years or more.
There was still no external differentiation between yūdansha (black belt ranks) and mudansha (those who had not yet attained a dan grade). Different athletic departments within the Japanese school system were already using markers of rank, most notably in swimming, where advanced swimmers wore a black ribbon around their waists. [ 4 ]
Some aikido organizations use belts to distinguish practitioners' grades, often simply white and black belts to distinguish kyu and dan grades, although some use various belt colors. In aikido, the title shihan often is granted to teachers when they reach 6th dan. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is sometimes associated with certain rights, such as the right to give out black belt ( dan ) ranks. However, the title is distinct from the black belt ranking system ( 段位 dan'i ).

The first black belts to denote a dan rank in the 1880s [clarification needed]. Initially the wide obi was used; as practitioners trained in kimono, only white and black obi were used. It was not until the early 1900s, after the introduction of the judogi, that an expanded colored belt system of awarding rank was created. [1]
