The Philippi Germans arrived in Cape Town in three groups between 1860 and 1883, and became known for their ability to grow vegetables in the sandy soils of the Cape Flats. [ 6 ] Until the 1970s the area was mainly used for grazing with a few farms located in the area.
The Köppen climate classification is the most widely used climate classification scheme. [2] It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, [3] [4] with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936.
The exception is the Western Cape and its capital city Cape Town where the climate is Mediterranean and it rains more in the wintertime.
