It is 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest of the town of Shipshewana and 6 miles (10 km) east of Middlebury. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Shipshewana Lake CDP has a total area of 0.64 square miles (1.66 km 2), of which 0.33 square miles (0.85 km 2) are land and 0.31 square miles (0.80 km 2), or 48.12%, are water. The road enters Shipshewana from the south and passes through an intersection with US 20. North of US 20, SR 5 passes through the commercial area of Shipshewana and passes through the center of town. The road leaves Shipshewana and passes through rural LaGrange County. Shortly after leaving Shipshewana SR 5 ends at an intersection with SR 120.
