BNSF Railway (reporting mark BNSF) is the largest freight railroad in the United States. One of six North American Class I railroads, BNSF has 36,000 employees, [1] 33,400 miles (53,800 km) of track in 28 states, and over 8,000 locomotives. [2]
BNSF has trackage rights on the CPR La Riviere Subdivision between Academy Rd to just north of Portage Avenue, and the CNR Rivers Subdivision between Lindsay St, and Fort Rouge Yard. BNSF also has trackage rights on the entire CN Letellier Sub, usually just used for shunting cars at the CNR Fort Rouge Yard.
It carries the main line of the BNSF Railway, the Scenic Subdivision, on its way north to Everett and south to King Street Station and Seattle's Industrial District. The Salmon Bay Bridge, which is located west of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, is the last bridge to span the Lake Washington Ship Canal before it becomes Puget Sound.
