During the restoration of the 19th century new frescoes were painted in 1835 and 1884. Modern restotators in 2006-2017 managed to save both layers, they extracted the younger frescoes and transferred them to a new base. The 19th century frescoes nowadays are displayed in the Art Gallery of the Polotsk National History and Art Museum. [2] [4]

The work cost 120 grivnas. Inside, the cross contained pieces of the Holy Cross and other relics. In the 13th century, the cross was relocated to Smolensk and in 1514 to Moscow. It was returned to Polotsk by Ivan the Terrible in 1563. The cross was thoroughly photographed for the record in 1896.

Carl Christian Anton Christensen (November 28, 1831 – July 3, 1912) was a Danish-American painter who painted the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). [2] Of him, it has been said that he "did more than any other person to capture the images of the history of Mormon migration to Utah and the life lived there".
There, he demonstrated artistic abilities from an early age. In 1890, he was one of a group of "art missionaries" who studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under the sponsorship of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), in preparation for painting murals at the nearly completed Salt Lake Temple.
