WHL0137-LS, also known as Earendel, is a star located in the constellation of Cetus.Discovered in 2022 by the Hubble Space Telescope, it is the earliest and most distant known star, at a comoving distance of 28 billion light-years (8.6 billion parsecs).
If this is the case, that it was flung out of the galaxy by the central black hole, it is then the first example of a star that has undergone the Hills mechanism. The star's discovery has been credited to Sergey Koposov, assistant professor of physics at Carnegie Mellon University , as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5).
Zooming in on the very faint neutron star RX J1856.5–3754 Hubble image of RX J1856.5−3754—the first direct observation of an isolated neutron star in visible light. RX J1856.5−3754 is thought to have formed in a supernova explosion of its companion star about one million years ago and is moving across the sky at 108 km/s.
A study published in 2013 [12] used the Fine Guidance Sensors of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to measure a precise parallax (and therefore distance and luminosity) for the star. This information was used to estimate an age for the star of 14.46 ± 0.8 billion years.
The Neutron Star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) is a NASA telescope on the International Space Station, designed and dedicated to the study of the extraordinary gravitational, electromagnetic, and nuclear physics environments embodied by neutron stars, exploring the exotic states of matter where density and pressure are higher than in atomic nuclei.
Artist's conception of a white dwarf, right, accreting hydrogen from the Roche lobe of its larger companion star A nova (pl. novae or novas) is a transient astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently "new" star (hence the name "nova", Latin for "new") that slowly fades over weeks or months.
Gliese 581 (/ ˈ ɡ l iː z ə /) is a red dwarf star of spectral type M3V which hosts a planetary system, 20.5 light-years (6.3 parsecs) away from Earth in the constellation Libra. Its estimated mass is about a third of that of the Sun, and it is the 101st closest known star system to the Sun. [15] Gliese 581 is one of the oldest, least active ...
