Born at Amport House in 1801 as the eldest son of the 13th Marquess of Winchester, he was educated at Eton. [1] On 10 April 1817, he was commissioned a cornet in the 10th Light Dragoons, [2] bought a lieutenancy on 16 November 1820, [3] and a captaincy in the 35th Regiment of Foot on 12 June 1823. [4]

John Paulet, 5th Marquess of Winchester (c. 1598 – 5 March 1675), styled Lord John Paulet until 1621 and Lord St John from 1621 to 1628, was the third but eldest surviving son of William Paulet and his successor as 5th Marquess of Winchester. [1]

After graduating from Cambridge, Paulet was commissioned as an ensign into the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, serving from 1784–86. He then sat in the Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for Truro from 1792–96. His father succeeded as Marquess of Winchester in 1794, giving Paulet the courtesy title of Earl of Wiltshire.
Jane Paulet née Savage, Marchioness of Winchester (before 26 May 1607 – 15 April 1631) was an English aristocrat, and her death was the subject of several poems. [1]She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage of Rocksavage and Elizabeth Darcy, baptised at Isleworth on 26 May 1607.
