The base was built from 4–11 November 1968 by the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines approximately 10 km northwest of Khe Sanh and 2 km east of the Laotian border. [1] The base provided excellent views of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) transport network in Laos, but the Marines were unable to call fire missions due to U.S. Government policy.

Robert Charles Burke (November 7, 1949 – May 17, 1968) was a United States Marine who was killed in action during the Vietnam War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Private First Class Burke, at age 18, was the youngest Medal of Honor recipient of the Vietnam War.
Base Area 112 was a Viet Cong (VC) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) base area located in the mountains of Quảng Nam Province southwest of Da Nang near the area known to the Marines as the "Arizona Territory" The base was believed to support the PAVN 21st Regiment, 3rd Battalion, 68B Rocket Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 141st Regiment and command and support units.
