Gwen Marston née Gwendolyn Joy Miller (October 2, 1936 - April 19, 2019) was an American quilter, quilt teacher, lecturer, and author who championed a style of quilting she called liberated quiltmaking. She encouraged modern quilt makers to break away from using commercial quilt patterns and to learn to design their own unique pieces of art.
She was an imaginative quilt maker. She based each of her quilts on traditional patterns, but interpreted the patterns in her own unique way. She was a brilliant designer, who crafted her quilts with original details and techniques that were new to quilt making.
Burns first started stitching on her Aunt Edna's feed sacks. Her first book, Make a Quilt in a Day: Log Cabin Pattern, was self-published in 1978.The book has been credited with starting a quilt-making revolution as people learned Burns's style of stitching a quilt.
