Stinson Municipal Airport is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States [3] (after College Park Airport). Established in October 1915, when the Stinson family initially leased the land from the City of San Antonio.
The museum's mission has been dedicated to tell the stories of San Antonio's and Texas' vital role in the development of civilian and military air power. It pays tribute to aviation pioneers, notably the co-founders of Stinson Airport Katherine Stinson , her sister Marjorie Stinson and brother Edward Stinson .

The Texas National Guard and 36th Infantry Division bought most of the airfield's buildings, but the field remained unused; by 1928 Ellington was again overtaken by tall prairie grass. That same year, a fire engulfed what was left of the airfield, consuming its remaining structures, except for the concrete foundations and a metal water tower.
On 5 April 1917, four aircraft took off from Fort Sam Houston, flew across San Antonio and landed on the new airfield, which at the time was a cleared cotton field. Tents had been erected as hangars, however, a permanent presence at the airfield was not established until 7 May when 700 men arrived. A week later, the population had grown to 4,000.
