[1] Track racing uses an artificial lure (usually a form of windsock) [2] that travels ahead of the greyhounds on a rail until the greyhounds cross the finish line.
Greyhound racing was introduced in August 1976, in order to boost both attendance and revenue. It was at this point that horse races ended. [3] During the 1980s, Wheeling Downs ranked third or fourth in the country in amounts wagered in the then 42 dog tracks around the country. [4] Slot machines first arrived in 1994. [5]
The track's first national championship race was held in September 1948. In the second race on October 10, popular AAA National driving champion Ted Horn was killed in the fourth turn when a spindle on his championship car broke. The national championship race for the USAC Silver Crown dirt cars is held in his honor.

In 1986, Kansas voters permitted parimutuel betting, setting the idea of the track into action. The track officially opened in 1989 with considerable expectations. Kansas claimed it was the home of greyhounds with the National Greyhound Association operating in Abilene, Kansas which is also the location for the National Greyhound Hall of Fame. [1]
A 10,000 strong crowd witnessed the seven races including two hurdle events and the first greyhound to win a race was Arrow Tranby winning one of the 500 yards races in a time of 32.08 secs at odds of 6-1 when winning the Shirley Stakes. [5]
