The 2000–01 English Premiership (called the Zurich Premiership for sponsorship reasons) was the 14th season of the top flight of the English domestic rugby union competitions. Leicester Tigers finished top of the league for the third year in a row giving them their fifth English champions title.
The 1999–2000 English Premiership (known as the Allied Dunbar Premiership for sponsorship reasons) was the thirteenth full season of rugby union within the first tier of the English leagues, known as the Premiership. The league was reduced from fourteen teams to twelve following London Scottish and Richmond both entering administration.
The English Premiership operates a salary cap, [98] set by the Premiership Rugby Board, specifying the money a club can spend on the player salaries of its squad per season. Until the 2024–25 season, the base cap is £5 million, with an "academy credit" of up to £600,000 (£100,000 per player for up to six players).
September – Channel 5 takes over from ITV as broadcaster of highlights of the Premiership Rugby. The deal also sees five matches per season broadcast live by the channel. The league consisted of fourteen teams, playing each other on a home and away basis to make a total of twenty-six matches for each team. There were two promotion places with the top two teams promoted to the newly named 2000–01 National Division One (previously known as the Allied Dunbar Premiership Two).
