Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni or MCAS Iwakuni (岩国飛行場, Iwakuni hikōjō) (IATA: IWK, ICAO: RJOI) is a joint Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces and United States Marine Corps air station located in the Nishiki river delta, 1.3 NM (2.4 km; 1.5 mi) southeast of Iwakuni Station [1] in the city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
While stationed at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California the squadron transitioned to the F/A-18A Hornet on 24 January 1991 and were officially re-designated Strike Fighter Squadron 27 (VFA-27). The squadron also changed roles as well as aircraft and were now a fighter/attack squadron, performing air-to-air as well as air-to-ground attack missions.
Two distinct squadrons have been designated VF-102. The first VF-102 was established on 1 May 1952 and redesignated VA-36 on 1 July 1955. [1]The second VF-102 was established in 1955, was eventually redesignated as VFA-102, and is the subject of the remainder of this article.
