General Santos, officially the City of General Santos [note 1] and abbreviated as GenSan, is a highly urbanized city in the region of Soccsksargen, Philippines.According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 697,315 people making it the most populous city in Soccsksargen Region.
The region also shares a maritime border with Gorontalo and North Sulawesi provinces of Indonesia. The region has extensive coastlines, valleys and mountain ranges. Known for its river system, the region is the drainage basin of Mindanao, particularly at the Cotabato Basin, a large depression surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides.
General Santos, the only coastal city/town located on the shores of Sarangani Bay, is the largest city in both the province and the region (by population), but is governed independently from the province. The province of Sarangani used to be part of South Cotabato until it was made an independent province in 1992.
When General Santos finally became a city under the same name on June 15, 1968, by virtue of Republic Act No. 5412, it remained part of the representation of South Cotabato in accordance with Section 104 of its city charter. [4] South Cotabato was represented in the Interim Batasang Pambansa as part of Region XI from 1978 to 1984.

Prior to gaining separate representation, areas now under the jurisdiction of General Santos were represented under the Department of Mindanao and Sulu (1917–1935), the historical Cotabato Province (1935–1967), Region XI (1978–1984) and South Cotabato (lone district, 1967–1972; at-large district, 1984–1986; first district, 1987–2019).
The district covers its southern municipalities of Polomolok, Tampakan and Tupi, and, until 2022, the independent city of General Santos. [4] [5] [6] It is currently represented in the 19th Congress by Isidro Lumayag of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas. [7]
The Port of General Santos (Filipino: Pantalan ng General Santos), also known as the Makar Port, is a seaport in General Santos in the Philippines. [2] The port is used to transport cargo in and out of General Santos, serving the wider Soccsksargen region. [3] From 2008 until 2018, the seaport did not serve domestic passenger services.
