In computer networking, DHCP churn or IP churn is the rate at which hosts in a network change IP addresses using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). IP churn is studied in the literature because it is a source of noise in internet measurement tasks, as it makes more difficult to estimate the unique number of users or devices connected to a network that visited a web page.
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6 (DHCPv6) is a network protocol for configuring Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) hosts with IP addresses, IP prefixes, default route, local segment MTU, and other configuration data required to operate in an IPv6 network.

Persistent configuration is also known as using a static IP address. In contrast, when a computer's IP address is assigned each time it restarts, this is known as using a dynamic IP address.
