The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (abbreviated RMWB) [5] [6] is a specialized municipality in northeast Alberta, Canada. It is the largest regional municipality in Canada by area (105650.88km2 | this number includes Wood Buffalo Nation Park of Canada) [ 7 ] and is home to oil sand deposits known as the Athabasca oil sands .
Improvement District No. 24, or Improvement District No. 24 (Wood Buffalo), [4] is an improvement district in Alberta, Canada. Coextensive with the portion of Wood Buffalo National Park in northeast Alberta , the improvement district provides local governance for lands within the park that are not within Indian reserves .
Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo is a largely rural riding in the northeast corner of Alberta. Municipally, the riding consists of the northern part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and almost all of Improvement District No. 24. The riding is home to the bulk of industrial activity relating to the Athabasca oil sands.

Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest national park of Canada at 44,741 km 2 (17,275 sq mi). [3] It is in northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories . Larger in area than Switzerland , [ 4 ] it is the second-largest national park in the world. [ 5 ]
It is located in the Caribou Mountains, immediately west of Wood Buffalo National Park in a remote backcountry area. The closest communities in Alberta are Fort Vermilion and Garden River.
