While training with Ash and Pikachu, Scorbunny is teased by Goh's Darmanitan into using a Fire-type move, but things do not go well. Scorbunny is frustrated, and when Goh seems unsympathetic Scorbunny runs away. It manages to learn Ember, but Goh is too interested in catching Pokémon to notice.
The competition requires all participants to catch an Alolan Geodude, a Bruxish, and a Passimian. The race is interrupted by Team Rocket, who are there to steal Ash's Pikachu. On his way, he discovers an Axew belonging to a trainer named Iris. Ash sees a flock of Pidove and battles one of them, capturing it.
