The building's majority of tenants (over 1300) work for the State of Ohio. The structure cost the state US$26 million to build in 1977–1979 (about $121 million now). [2] In front of the building sits sculptor Tony Smith's Last. [3] The uniquely shaped structure is seven-sided, which closely resembles the dimensions of the land it is built on.
It contains 21 floors, and was completed in 1972. [4] The AECOM Building currently stands as the 29th-tallest building in the city, tied in rank with the Ohio Savings Plaza and Ameritech Center. The architectural firm who designed the building was Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, [3] who also designed Chicago's Willis Tower and Dubai's Burj Khalifa.

The structure stretches from the tower's lobby to its arched entrance at East 9th Street. From 1964 until it closed in 1995, the tower's 38th floor was home to the Stouffer's Top of the Town restaurant which offered diners a view of Cleveland's skyline. In 2003, Minshall-Stewart Properties acquired Erieview Tower and the Galleria. [6]
