On February 6, 1953, the highway was extended to US 82 (absorbing the southernmost 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of FM 1200) and was extended 6.7 miles (10.8 km) northwest; FM 1201 was extended to Sivells Bend later that year on October 28. A spur route, FM Spur 1201, was designated on March 2, 1967, along the highway's old location near Moss Lake.
Texas State Highway 118 joins Highway 17 through the center of Fort Davis, but leads northwest through the Davis Mountains 52 miles (84 km) to Interstate 10 and southeast 23 miles (37 km) to Alpine. At RM 505, the highway becomes part of the primary route between Valentine and Fort Davis, the only two towns in the county. Past this junction, the route turns eastward, and the roadway improves with paved shoulders and wider lanes for the remaining 22.9 miles (36.9 km) until its terminus at SH 17 about 2 miles (3 km) south of Fort Davis. On May 1, 1931, SH 118 was replaced by SH 17 and SH 118 was instead assigned on the old route of SH 3 from Alpine to Fort Davis which was completed. [4] By 1932, the parks board finally acquired land for a park ending the need for a park highway. [5] The road, which had then been built from Fort Davis to Fowlkes Ranch, was designated as SH 166. The highway commission accepted the park road in Davis Mountains State Park and seven other parks as the original park roads in the state system on June 22, 1937. [2] In 1939, SH 118 was extended from Fort Davis to Kent over the portion of SH 166 at the terminus of PR 3. [7] The state ended the SH 166 designation over that same portion in 1941. [8]
