In 2004, Lawson was introduced to four members of the San Francisco-based a cappella group Talk of the Town (Rayfield Ragler, Stan Lockwood, Paul Carrington and Carl Douglas), who had spent 35 years studying Lawson's recordings and wishing they had a lead singer like him. Upon his wife's urging, Lawson became lead singer for the group.

Herbert "Toubo" Rhoad, one of the original members of the Persuasions, died in 1988 while on tour, and Raymond Sanders came in as an additional voice.
