On 4 May [O.S. 14 May] 1607, 105 to 108 English men and boys (surviving the voyage from England) established the Jamestown Settlement for the Virginia Company of London, on a slender peninsula on the bank of the James River. It became the first long-term English settlement in North America.
Upon the settlement's founding in 1607, the local indigenous tribes were willing to trade provisions to the Jamestown colonists for metal tools. The London Company's primary concern was the survival of the colony. Due to the interests of the company, the colonists would be required to maintain civil relations with the Powhatan.
In December 1609, a fleet commanded by Sir Thomas Gates set out from Plymouth, England, carrying 500 settlers, food, arms, and equipment to Jamestown, only to meet disaster. The ship hit a reef, causing damage and scattering the survivors. On May 16, 1610, they built James Fort, later renamed as Jamestown Colony.
