Kanyakumari (UK: / ˌ k ʌ n j ɑː k ʊ ˈ m ɑː r iː /; lit. ' The Unmarried girl(or Kanya) ' referring to Devi Kanya Kumari, [1] officially known as Kanniyakumari, [2] formerly known as Cape Comorin) [3] is a town and a second grade municipality in Kanyakumari district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.
Nagercoil Municipality was established in 1920 during the reign of Travancore State. In 1947, Nagercoil was upgraded to a primary municipality. Kanyakumari district, which was part of the princely state of Travancore, was annexed to Tamil Nadu on 1 November 1956 as a result of the Kumari liberation struggle.
