The Wilderness is managed by the United States Forest Service in Tennessee and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. The highest elevation in the Big Frog Wilderness is the 4,224-foot (1,287 m) peak of Big Frog Mountain in Tennessee. Although not a high mountain, Big Frog seems to dominate the Wilderness because it stands alone.
Big Frog Mountain is a mountain located primarily in southeastern Tennessee in the Big Frog Wilderness, within the Cherokee National Forest. It is located within the Blue Ridge Mountains , part of the Appalachian Mountains .
The Cherokee National Forest contains such notable sites as the Ocoee River (site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events); 150 miles (240 km) of the Appalachian Trail; Citico Creek Wilderness; Big Frog Mountain within Big Frog Wilderness, and surrounds both the Tennessee Valley Authority Watauga Reservoir and Wilbur Reservoir.
Parts of these wilderness extend outside Chattahoochee National Forest, as indicated. The wildernesses are: Big Frog Wilderness (Cherokee NF in Tennessee and Chattahoochee NF in Georgia) Blood Mountain Wilderness; Brasstown Wilderness; Cohutta Wilderness (Chattahoochee NF in Georgia and Cherokee NF in Tennessee)
The name "Cohutta" is derived from the Cherokee word cohutta, meaning "frog" or possibly "a shed roof supported on poles." The wilderness's rich cultural history, coupled with its ecological significance, makes it a critical area for both preservation and recreation. One notable historical feature is the Cherokee ballfield on Little Bald Mountain.
The range also extends into Georgia, where it is known as the Cohutta Mountains which when combined with the Big Frog Wilderness, this creates one of the largest patches of roadless wilderness areas east of the Mississippi River. Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range, and was named after it.
Map of Georgia. The protected areas of Georgia cover almost one million acres (4,000 km 2) of the state. These areas are managed by different federal and state level authorities and receive varying levels of protection. Some areas are managed as wilderness while others are operated with acceptable commercial exploitation.
