Sears Modern Homes were sold between 1908 and 1942. There is some debate about whether some homes from Sears that were built in 1941 and 1942 qualify as Sears Modern Homes. Some of these homes were based on models offered in the Sears Modern Homes catalog. Others were not, but were still pre-cut kit homes built from plans and materials from Sears.
It is popularly used by artists as a painting surface, typically stretched across a wooden frame. Modern canvas is usually made of cotton or linen, or sometimes polyvinyl chloride (PVC), although historically it was made from hemp. It differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as denim, in being plain weave rather than twill weave.
The painting is commonly considered a masterpiece of trompe-l'œil painting [2] for its deceptively sculptural representation of the back of a framed painting in a canvas. The work has already been called as "the most radical meditation about painting as an object and as an image", [3] and is interpreted as an early example of conceptual art. [4]
