If this surah is read together with the two surahs preceding it, namely Al-Qiyamah and Al-Insan, and the two surahs following it, namely An-Naba and An-Naziat, it becomes obvious that all these surahs are the revelations of the same period, and they deal with the same theme, which has been impressed on the people of Makkah in different ways. [3]
The word surah was used at the time of Muhammad as a term with the meaning of a portion or a set of verses of the Qur'an. This is evidenced by the appearance of the word surah in multiple locations in the Quran such as verse : "a sûrah which We have revealed and made ˹its rulings˺ obligatory, and revealed in it clear commandments so that you may be mindful."
Tafsīr al-Jalālayn (Arabic: تفسير الجلالين, lit. 'Tafsir of the two Jalals') is a classical Sunni interpretation of the Quran, composed first by Jalal ad-Din al-Maḥalli in 1459 and then completed after his death by Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti in 1505, thus its name, which means "Tafsir of the two Jalals".
The original text of the Sīrat Rasūl Allāh by Ibn Ishaq did not survive. Yet it was one of the earliest substantial biographies of Muhammad. However, much of the original text was copied over into a work of his own by Ibn Hisham (Basra; Fustat, died 833 AD, 218 AH).
Classical scholars such as Muqatil ibn Sulayman and al-Mawardi interpreting surah An-Naba 78:21 mentioned those angels who guard hell dwell in hell and actively monitoring the infidels until their descent into Hell, [80] while Muhammad Sulaiman al-Ashqar from Islamic University of Madinah also highlights these roles in the same verse. [81]
According to Abdullah bin Abbas, this Surah was sent down before Surah An-Naba, whilst Muḥammad Khaṭīb has opined that surah 79 was revealed around five years before the Hijrah, although other commentators have dated the surah’s revelation at eight years before the Hijrah. [10]
