Lake Petenwell is an artificial lake on the Wisconsin River in central Wisconsin. It is located in Adams, Juneau, and Wood counties next to Castle Rock Lake. It covers over 23,000 acres (93 km 2) and is 42 feet (13 m) deep. Lake Petenwell is Wisconsin's second largest lake at 23,040 acres (93.2 km 2) or approximately 36 square miles (93 km 2).
Camp Petenwell was a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp that was in operation from July 1933 until November 1941. [1] This camp was located four miles east of Necedah, Wisconsin . The six acres of land that this camp occupied is now currently covered by the waters of the Petenwell Flowage.
Castle Rock Lake was created as the result of a hydropower project initiated by the Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO) in tandem with the related Petenwell Dam and Reservoir to dam the Wisconsin River.
