Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, commonly known as Coke Zero, is a diet soda produced by the Coca-Cola Company. [1] The drink was introduced in 2005 as Coca-Cola Zero as a new no-calorie cola. [2] In 2017, the formula was modified and the name updated, the announcement of which led to some backlash from consumers. [3]
In response to the successful launch of Cherry Coke in 1985, Pepsi extensively test-marketed a formulation simply called "Cherry Pepsi" in Canada from 1985 [2] to 1987. [3] In the United States, Cherry Cola Slice was introduced as part of the line in 1986 and was offered until the launch of Pepsi Wild Cherry.
In 2000, the line was reformulated yet again, this time to replace aspartame with Splenda brand sucralose and Sunett brand acesulfame potassium. It became the first major diet soda in the United States to use neither aspartame nor saccharin as a sweetener. In 2005, "Pure Zero" was added to the name, and a cherry cola flavor was introduced in 2006.
Coke Zero has two ingredients Diet Coke lacks: potassium citrate and acesulfame potassium. And Diet Coke has one ingredient that’s not in Coke Zero: citric acid.
The ingredient set to be re-labelled is aspartame, a popular artificial sweetener found in an array of food products including Diet Coke, chewing gum and light yoghurt.
