It is the second-largest county in New Mexico by area, after Catron County. Socorro County ranges in elevation from approximately 4,528 ft (1,380 m) on the banks of the Rio Grande to 10,784 ft (3,287 m) at the top of South Baldy peak in the Magdalena Mountains. The southern portion of the Rocky Mountains extend into New Mexico and Socorro County.
UTC-6 (MDT) San Marcial was a community in Socorro County, New Mexico, United States, founded in 1854 and survivor of two floods and a fire, but is now a ghost town, a deserted site with little left of the original town, destroyed in a great flood in 1929. San Marcial was approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Socorro.
Significant dates. Added to NRHP. February 20, 1991. Designated NMSRCP. March 31, 1978. The August Holver Hilton House in Socorro, New Mexico was built in 1912. The house was deemed historically important as the home of August Holver Hilton, father of Conrad Hilton. The father, born in 1856 in Norway, was successful as a merchant in San Antonio.
