Rahsaan Roland Kirk (born Ronald Theodore Kirk; August 7, 1935 [1] – December 5, 1977), [2] known earlier in his career simply as Roland Kirk, was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist who played tenor saxophone, flute, and many other instruments.
In tenth grade he performed with the jazz band at Texas Southern University. [4] He was in the second Vail Jazz Workshop in 1997, [5] and went on to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. [6] At the New School, Glasper met neo-soul singer Bilal. [7]

Soul jazz is often characterized by organ trios featuring the Hammond organ and small combos including saxophone , brass instruments , electric guitar , bass, drums, piano, vocals and electric organ.
