Palmares, or Quilombo dos Palmares, was a quilombo, a community of escaped slaves and others, in colonial Brazil that developed from 1605 until its suppression in 1694. It was located in the captaincy of Pernambuco, in what is today the Brazilian state of Alagoas.
On February 6, 1694, after 67 years of conflict with the cafuzos, or Maroons, of Palmares, the Portuguese succeeded in destroying Cerca do Macaco, the kingdom's central settlement. Some resistance continued, but on November 20 , 1695 Zumbi was killed and decapitated, his head displayed on a pike to dispel any legends of his immortality.
A few Malays of Batavia, brought by the Dutch into the Settlement of the Cape of Good Hope, are possibly the first Muslims to arrive in South Africa. The first Asiatics, arriving on the ship Haaselt, are part of a group of exiles whose descendants are now an important element of Cape Town's population. [7] [8]
The Anglo–Boer War affected all ethnic groups in South Africa. Black people were recruited or conscripted by both sides into working for them either as combatants or non-combatants to sustain the respective war efforts of both the Boers and the British. The official statistics of blacks killed in action are inaccurate.
