The size and proportions of a book depend on the size of the original full sheet. If a sheet 480 by 640 mm (19 by 25 in) is used to print a quarto, the resulting untrimmed pages, will be approximately half as large in each dimension: width 240 mm ( 9 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) and height 320 mm ( 12 + 1 ⁄ 2 in).

The term "folio" as applied to such books may refer simply to the size, i.e., books that are approximately 15 inches (38 cm) tall. The term folio in the modern context of paper size commonly refers to foolscap folio , which is print paper sized 8.5×13.5 in (216×343 mm), slightly larger (by 18.7%) than A4 paper .
