Prior to the current centre being built, a smaller Karrinyup Shopping Centre was constructed in 1964 on a 0.2-hectare (0.5-acre) corner site (Karrinyup Lot 450) bounded by Francis Avenue and Karrinyup Avenue, on a 5-year lease from the Lands Department). This was built as the precursor to a larger centre expected to be constructed in the future.
In 2000, David Jones returned to Western Australia after a near 25-year absence in the state. All five stores of the former department store Aherns were converted into David Jones stores in Karrinyup, Booragoon, Claremont, Rockingham and the Perth CBD. The Perth CBD Store was the only store of the five that was renovated.
General Growth Properties first conceived the idea of a mall in Maumee, Ohio in the mid-1990s. Initially, the mall was to have been an enclosed project, but in 2003, the company decided on building a lifestyle center. [2] Stores that were proposed to open at the mall included Sears, Galyan's, Kaufmann's and Parisian. [3]
Karrinyup station originally opened in September 1974. [2] It was refurbished in 2007, providing improved seating and accessible ramps to the adjacent shopping centre, and subsequently upgraded in 2015. [3] [4] [5] In 2020, the bus station temporarily moved to the median strip while redevelopment works were carried out at the shopping centre. [6]
