April 13, 1992 (Mount Hood National Forest [a: Wamic to Rhododendron: Beginning with its construction by Sam Barlow in 1846, this toll road provided the first overland connection for wagons between The Dalles and Oregon City over Mount Hood, and offered a majority of Oregon Trail emigrants an alternative to the hazardous raft passage down the Columbia River from The Dalles to Fort Vancouver.

Hood River (originally called Dog River) post office was established (named by Mary Coe, who founded the city with her husband Nathaniel Coe) at the site of the present city on September 30, 1868, [9] and the city itself was incorporated in 1895. [10]
For years, the area was owned by the Koberg family who developed the beach and built a rustic style dance hall which was popular with people from nearby Hood River. The Highway Department acquired the land in 1953 and removed the dance hall the next year. In 1962, an entrance road, a parking area and other facilities became available. [2]
The Hood River museum opened October 17, 1999, and attracted about three thousand visitors in its first year. [4] The collection contained about 110 carved animals, an operational Wurlitzer band organ, chariots, and other artifacts. The exhibits featured European animals, major American carvers, armored horses, and the restoration process. [3]
