Excelsior, or wood wool. Wood wool, known primarily as excelsior in North America, is a product made of wood slivers cut from logs. It is mainly used in packaging, for cooling pads in home evaporative cooling systems known as swamp coolers, for erosion control mats, and as a raw material for the production of other products such as bonded wood wool boards.
Wood wool boards and wood-wool layers in composite boards are generally manufactured using coniferous wood species, mainly spruce and pine. The wood logs are processed to make wood fibres of various widths, generally between 1mm and 3mm. After drying the wood, it is planed into long fibres in a wood wool machine.
The grazier would decide on the extent of crutching: the rear of the sheep is almost always shorn, whereas wool around the face, ears, underside and pizzle may also be removed depending on the circumstances such as the weather, length of fleece, and amount of seed or other impurities present in the fleece and the underlying reason for crutching ...
Wood fibres can be used as a substrate in hydroponics. Wood wool (i.e. wood slivers) have been a substrate of choice since the earliest days of the hydroponics research. [4] However, more recent research suggests that wood fibre can have detrimental effects on "plant growth regulators". [5] [non-primary source needed]

Crutching is the mechanical removal of wool around the tail and anus (and vulva in ewes) in breeds of sheep with woolly points where this is necessary. Mulesing is the removal of skin to provide permanent resistance to breech strike in Merino sheep.
Crutching is the trimming of excess wool from the breech area, and the timing of both shearing and crutching is critical in reducing the amount of flystrike. Surgical procedures are also performed in the sheep industry to help prevention, one of which is controversial due to its invasive nature.
