The town is the oldest in West Virginia, founded in 1762 as Mecklenburg. No structures are known to exist from the time before the town became known as Shepherdstown. Developed during Springfield's industrial growth of the 1850s to the 1920s, the South Fountain Avenue Historic District encompasses about 15 square blocks south of downtown Springfield, across the street from South High School.
