NASCAR committed to building a Hall of Fame and on March 6, 2006, the City of Charlotte was selected as the location. Ground was broken for the $160 million facility on January 26, 2007, and it officially opened on May 11, 2010, [1] with the inaugural class inducted the day following the 2010 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.
It includes exhibits about all four members of the Petty family who are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame including Lee, Richard, Maurice and Dale Inman. [4] There are plans to further expand the museum to include more on Lee Petty's legacy as well as the "Reaper Shed", the spot where Lee founded Petty Engineering. [3] [5]
The attraction also included exhibits related to the Daytona 200 motorcycle race, the 24 Hours of Daytona, as well as the Daytona Beach & Road Course. The attraction opened in 1996. In 2005, the site was one of the finalists to host the NASCAR Hall of Fame. [1]
