You can add a table using HTML rather than wiki markup, as described at HTML element#Tables. However, HTML tables are discouraged because wikitables are easier to customize and maintain, as described at manual of style on tables. Also, note that the <thead>, <tbody>, <tfoot>, <colgroup>, and <col> elements are not supported in wikitext.
For large lists, this may be much slower than the times that can be obtained by representing an associative array as a binary search tree or as a hash table. Lists and tables are two different ways to format multiple, similar items on a page. Lists and HTML tables go back to Wikipedia's early days. The current wikicode tables (see the section about tables), which you can edit more easily and even sort, came later. You'll find many more lists than tables on Wikipedia.
This is useful for many things. For example; for quickly updating country lists, or adding/updating a rank column, or copying a list of full names for states or countries.
