The edit summaries will sometimes assist in explaining the purpose of or the actions within the edit. However, this is optional. Sometimes Wikipedians will often use shorthand to explain their edits. For example, npov and pov mean neutral point-of-view and point-of-view, respectively, ce means copy editing, and rv means revert.
The revision after the edit appears below the changes so you can see the result of the edit. (hist) takes you to the page history, so you can see all edits made to that page. This can be useful if someone has updated a page you have worked on, and you want to see their changes.
WikiBlame is an online browser-based tool for searching the revision history of a MediaWiki-based wiki for a text string to identify the author, date and time of a particular change to the page. WikiBlame is available on each page by selecting View history → Find addition/removal.
If a glance through the page history doesn't make you suspect vandalism (for example, vandalism is unlikely if the last edit was more than a week ago, and by a registered editor with a user page and a user talk page), you can go ahead and edit the article without probing more deeply.
