The Somerville Tattersall Stakes, currently run as the Tattersalls Stakes, is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old colts and geldings. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September.
The race was renamed the Rogers Gold Cup in 1984, and the minimum age was raised to four in 1985. Under the sponsorship of Tattersalls it became known as the Tattersalls Rogers Gold Cup, and this was shortened to the present title in 1993. For a period the event held Group 2 status, and it was promoted to Group 1 level in 1999.
In the early days the Tattersalls Cup raced over 1 mile (1,610 m); from 1900 to 1914 it was 1.5 miles (2,410 m); from 1915 to 1918, 1.75 miles (2,820 m); and since then 2 miles (3,220 m), the committee feeling that by increasing the length of the events it was assisting in improving the stamina of South Australian thoroughbreds.
Overdose was English-bred and was sold at Tattersalls December Yearling Sales in November 2006 for just 2,000 guineas (£2,100). His sire was a miler called Starborough and he was out of Our Poppet (IRE) by Warning. He was a half-brother of three winners. [1]

Winners of the Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle usually go on to compete in either the Supreme Novices' Hurdle or the Gallagher Novices' Hurdle.
