The Defence Services Academy (Burmese: စစ်တက္ကသိုလ်, lit. 'Military University', ဒေါ်စိန်အေး Daw Sein Aye pronounced [sɪʔ tɛʔkəθò]) located in Pyin Oo Lwin, is the premier military service academy of Myanmar, training future officers for all three branches of Myanmar military.
The Defence Services Technological Academy was established as the Defence Services Institute of Technology (DSIT) on 1 February 1993 at Pyin Oo Lwin [1] when all civilian colleges and universities in Myanmar were shut down by the military government, following the 1988 nationwide uprising.
The predecessor to the OTS was founded in Mingaladon Township, Rangoon (now Yangon) by the Imperial Japanese Army on 20 August 1942, becoming the first military training school in the country. [4] After achieving independence in 1948, Myanmar's military established OTS in Maymyo (now Pyin Oo Lwin), near Mandalay. [4]
Opened in 1958, NDC was one of several training facilities opened in the mid-to-late 1950s, the most well known among them being the Defence Services Academy. The academy is open year-round, and is in session for eleven months of study in an academic year—ten months of medical science coursework plus a month of military science and military leadership. Some DSMA graduates continue their post-graduate education in the UK, India, Thailand, Russia, United States, Germany, Belgium and Singapore.
