The 1975 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The tournament was held from Monday 23 June until Saturday 5 July 1975. [ 3 ]
It was his first Wimbledon title and third and last major singles title overall. Ashe was the first Black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon, and the second Black player to do so overall, after Althea Gibson. Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was an American professional tennis player. He won three Grand Slam titles in singles and two in doubles. Ashe was the first Black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only Black man ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open.
After missing most of 1976 after having her third child, she returned to the tour in early 1977 but retired permanently that year when she learned she was expecting her fourth child. Her last Grand Slam tournament singles appearance was in the 1975 US Open. [ 12 ]
