In 1820, Alabama had 29 counties. By 1830 there were 36 and Native Americans still occupied large areas of land in northeast and far western Alabama. November 19, 1974. Byler Road is the oldest public road in Alabama still in use today. Constructed in the mid-1820s, it connected Courtland near the Tennessee River with Tuscaloosa near the Black Warrior River. Byler Road was named for Captain John Byler, who served in Andrew Jackson 's army at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

May 8, 1973. Cahaba, also spelled Cahawba, was the first permanent state capital of Alabama from 1820 to 1825. [2] It was the county seat of Dallas County, Alabama until 1866. Located at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers, the town endured regular seasonal flooding. The state legislature moved the capital to Tuscaloosa in 1826.
