Spencer was born on June 24, 1965, in Trenton, New Jersey, [1] to writer Cheryl Pelt, who separated from her husband when Spencer was very young. Spencer considered her mother's next husband, Tim Pelt, to be her father. The family relocated to the Bronx, New York.
