The backbone of New Zealand's national grid is the network of 220 kV transmission lines in each of the North and South Islands, which links the major power stations and the country's major cities. Supplementing this are 110 kV, 66 kV and 50 kV transmission lines, which supply provincial towns and cities with electricity from the 220 kV grid ...
The New Zealand Map Grid (NZMG) is a map projection based on the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 1949. [1] It has now been replaced by the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 projection, which is based on the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 using the GRS80 reference ellipsoid. [2] This is the grid setting used for GPS in New Zealand.
This was used for the Geodetic Datum 1949 and New Zealand Map Grid. [5] [2] This was followed by the use of aerial photography, orthophotos and finally satellite photos. [6] Later the New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 superseded the 1949 version, and the bespoke NZMG projection was replaced by New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000. [2]
English: A simplified map of the major electricity transmission network in New Zealand, with major generation (blue circles) and load (red circles) centres shown. The solid lines are major 220kV lines or corridors through the country, with the dashed line the HVDC link between the two islands.
The New Zealand Inter-Island HVDC link is a long distance bipolar HVDC "Classic" transmission scheme that uses overhead lines and submarine cables to connect between the South and North Islands. It uses thyristor -based line-commutated converters at each end of the link for rectifying and inverting between AC and DC.
Transmission – Transpower, a state-owned enterprise, operates the national transmission network, consisting of 11,000 kilometres (6,800 mi) of high voltage lines that connect generating stations with the grid, and supply distribution networks and large industrial consumers (direct consumers) in each of New Zealand's two main islands.

The line provides more transmission capacity between the Waikato River hydro stations and Auckland, and takes load off the existing 220 kV lines. Prior to the commissioning of the new line, all existing major transmission lines into Auckland converged on the Ōtāhuhu substation, creating a concentration of risk to the security of supply to ...
