A bar of gold that has just been solidified in Gold Reef City. Gold Reef City is an amusement park in Johannesburg, South Africa.Located on an old gold mine which closed in 1971, [1] the park is themed around the gold rush that started in 1886 on the Witwatersrand, and the buildings in the park are designed to mimic this period.

The Confidence Reef is notable as the first site of a payable gold discovery on the Witwatersrand, an event that contributed to the establishment of Johannesburg, the "City of Gold.'' The discovery spurred the development of other major gold mines, including the Main Reef in 1886, one of the richest gold-bearing areas in history.
It has been an important event in the city for many years, attracting in excess of 400,000 visitors in 2007. [1] It was also called the Grand Rand Show, when it was held a few weeks outside of Easter in the late 1980s. [2] There were no shows in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 restrictions on major events. The event has been held again since 2024.

Vaal Reefs is a gold bearing reef which is mined near the town of Orkney in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality in the North West province of South Africa.. The town of Orkney is home to a large gold mining operation originally owned by AngloGold Ashanti, a company that was originally incorporated in 1944 under the name of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited.
