Holiday Inn is a chain of hotels based in Atlanta, Georgia and a brand of IHG Hotels & Resorts.The chain was founded in 1952 by Kemmons Wilson (1913–2003), who opened the first location in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Boardwalk began as a 138-room Holiday Inn hotel with a restaurant, cocktail lounge, and meeting space with a capacity for 100 people. [2] Located at 3740 South Las Vegas Boulevard, [3] the hotel was designed by architect Homer Rissman, [4] and was completed in 1966.
The hotel division was then renamed from Holiday Hospitality to Bass Hotels & Resorts, to reflect its expansion beyond the Holiday Inn brand. [11] Bass changed its name to Six Continents in 2001, after having sold its brewing assets and the Bass name, and Bass Hotels & Resorts became Six Continents Hotels. [12]
The 520-room hotel opened on February 1, 1972, as the Holiday Inn Center Strip, [10] named for its location at the center of the Las Vegas Strip. [11] It consisted of a 14-story tower. [ 12 ] The adjacent Pyramids motel was purchased later that year for $750,000, and was demolished to provide additional parking space.
At an October 7, 2004 press conference in New York City, [19] Holiday Inn and Nickelodeon announced a partnership and renovation of the hotel, which would transform it into the Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn. The announcement followed a two-year deal in which Holiday Inn promoted SpongeBob SquarePants at its locations. [20]
