On 22 November 2021, the BPI announced that it would re-align the categories for the 42nd Brit Awards to be gender-neutral; it was stated that the change was intended to "[recognize] artists solely for their music and work, rather than how they choose to identify or as others may see them, as part of the Brits' commitment to evolving the show to be as inclusive and as relevant as possible."
The category was introduced in 2022 following a restructuring which resulted in the removal of gendered categories.
